Rising 4th Grade- Summer Work

Summer Work- Rising 4th Graders Dear Parents and Scholars, Congratulations! You survived the entire year, wearing a mask, staying six feet apart, and using the heck out of Clorox wipes- all while learning and working very hard! Now it is time to rest. Summer is meant for family, fun, and lazy days! It is also a time to practice and get ready for the upcoming school year. This summer I want you to pace yourself; you don’t need to rush to complete your summer work straight away. Instead, set aside 15-30 minutes of quiet time each day to read, write, engage in learning games or work in IXL. Make sure to keep on track with your learning this summer so you don’t lose your momentum going into 4th grade. The fall will be filled with many challenges and you want to be rested, relaxed and ready to go! Complete the core skills and concepts listed below using https://www.ixl.com/. These are essential for success in fourth grade. Work to a smart score of 90% Math: 4th Grade Skills IXL Topic Section Place Value A.1, A.2, and A.3 Estimation/Rounding A.20 Multiplication D.1 and D.2 ELA: 4th Grade Skills IXL Topic Section Shades of Meaning GG.1 Homophones DD.1 Identify Nouns KK.1 Action Verbs MM.1 Categories BB.1 Compound Words AA.1 Reading: Google Slides Book Report To continue encouraging and providing opportunities for reading, students will complete a book report using Google Slides. The focus of this book report should be a grade level appropriate fiction or non-fiction book that the student has read over the summer. Use the link below if you need help finding chapter books for summer reading: - http://www.ala.org/alsc/publications-resources/book-lists/2021-summer-reading-list and/or Scholastic Summer Reading Program: https://www.scholastic.com/site/summer-reading.html Directions: - Google Slides. Students will open a new Google Slides presentation in Google. (Click on the waffle>Slide > Blank Presentation) In the top left corner, they will rename the presentation to “Last Name- 4th Grade Book Report.” During the first week of school, the students will share their completed presentation with their fourth grade teacher. Below you will find the components that need to be included on each slide. On the slides that require descriptions, students should write in complete sentences. Students can use whichever Google Slides theme they prefer and are allowed to customize it to their liking. Slide 1 Your Name, Title, and Author of book. Slide 2 Write a summary of the story in 5-7 sentences. Slide 3 Describe the setting (where and when does the story take place) Slide 4 Describe the main character (s). Choose two character traits and provide evidence from the story that supports why those traits fit the character(s). Slide 5 Describe the theme or the main message of the story. Slide 6 Students will write if they would or would not recommend this book to a friend-explain why or why not. Email completed project to kris.miller@sascolts.org on or before the first day of school. I look forward to an exciting school year and I am anxious to meet all of my new scholars this August! I will check my school email periodically during the summer. If you should have any questions, comments or concerns please email me at kris.miller@sascolts.org. Have a wonderful summer vacation!

Dear 4 th grade Parents and Students, In consideration of a wonderful new year in 5 th grade next year, below you will find work needing to be completed over the summer. They may choose from: The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell Restart by Gordon Korman Encourage them to take notes on the book especially regarding characters, setting, problem, solution. They should be prepared to discuss and be tested on one of these books shortly after school starts. I wish you and your family a safe and happy summer vacation.
